Google has provided an official tool called Google Takeout, which allows you to download all the photos stored in Google Photos in one go. This is a great way to keep all your photos organized and accessible from one place. Let’s see how you can use Google Takeout to move media from Google Photos to your Synology NAS. We have mentioned steps below to help you get started. ..

Steps to move media from Google Photos to Synology NAS

To export your photos and videos from Google Photos, open the Google Photos file and select the folders you want to export from. Then, open the exported files in a new window or tab and use the following commands to get all of the data you need:

  • name each file after its folder name (e.g. “Photos_2018.zip”), not “Photos_2018.txt”
  • set “outputFormat” to “json”
  • save as a JSON file

To get rid of these files all at once, search for .json in the Takeout folder, select them all and throw them into the Trash. At this point, you can also restructure the folder directory as you see fit, but you don’t have to, as Synology Photos organizes images by date by default.

Synology NAS users can now access their Google Photos library through File Station. Simply open File Station and locate the folder configured with the Synology Photos package. Next, drag the Google Photos folder into this folder and drop it in. You can also access your photos through File Explorer or Finder if you have already linked your NAS to your computer’s file manager. ..

The Synology Photos web and phone apps will start processing your media files for indexing and the various Google Photos-inspired AI features. After this is done, your photos and videos should appear in the Synology Photos web and phone apps just as they do in Google Photos.

Final Words

Google Photos is great for storing small amounts of photos, but it’s not ideal for storing large files. Synology NAS devices are perfect for customers who want to store large files remotely. They have a lot of storage capacity, and they’re also very easy to use. ..
