The current state of the feature looks half-baked. The new VPN indicator (screenshot on the right) only appears when using a wired connection. It’s not an eyesore when using Wi-Fi. Another major limitation is the inability of the operating system to detect third-party his VPN applications. As such, accessing the VPN through a dedicated app does not change the network view.
To use the new indicator, you’ll need to manually configure her VPN connection in the Settings app. Some VPN services tell you how to connect using Windows’ built-in networking tools, so you’ll need to check the provider’s website for detailed instructions.
